ASEAN's Last Chance on Myanmar

Human rights know no border. We all have the obligation to promote and protect human rights, and to uphold international human rights and humanitarian laws that value the dignity and worth of every human being.

We join the call to reject the junta’s planned sham election and to demand a complete strategic reset in Myanmar.

Together with former Minister of Malaysia’s Foreign Affairs and current member of the House of Representatives of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Saifuddin Abdullah and former Minister of the Foreign Affairs of Thailand Khun Kasit Piromya, as well as former UN experts on Myanmar and founding members of Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) Marzuki Darusman, Yanghee Lee and Chris Sidoti, we stressed that genuine and credible nationwide elections can only take place in Myanmar once an authentic and inclusive peace agreement has been secured, all fighting has stopped, all political prisoners have been released, all legitimate political parties can participate, and independent international election monitors are granted access—the only conditions in which a free and fair election is possible.
